COUNSELING GOALS
I established Samui Counseling to offer mental health services with a western orientation to locals and ex-pats living in Koh Samui. My primary goal is to assist international children, adults, and families to live happier, fuller, and more productive lives. I approach counselling with an understanding of the need to create a safe space for my clients, allowing them to comfortably express themselves and discover the root causes of real issues that are affecting their lives. My sessions allow my clients to learn new and extremely effective ways of thinking, feeling, and responding to negative emotions.
MENTAL HEALTH COUNSELOR
More About Gerrie
Originally from Florida, USA, Gerrie is a licensed Mental Health Counselor (no. 11240). In 2013, Gerrie established Samui Health Counseling on the island of Koh Samui, Thailand. He set up his establishment to offer mental health services with a western orientation to ex-pats living in the region. Since establishing Counseling Samui, Gerri has assisted people ranging from 6 years old to 75 years old from 27 different countries. He also works closely with the international school in Samui, offering advise and counseling to students who are in need of a safe space beyond that of the school counselor.
When working in Orlando, Florida, Gerrie acted as a counselor for the Center for Drug Free Living – a locally funded organization backed by the state that offered a wide range of services to the local community. Much of Gerrie’s focus was on “prevention” work, helping the community schools with identifying students who may be considered as “high-risk”, and offering his services to both the students and their families.
Gerrie also worked as a facilitator for a group counseling program called “Back on Track”. This program offered an intensive 5-week counseling schedule focusing on drug and alcohol abuse, and psychological and education counseling for students aged between 12 and 18 who had previously been caught with illicit substances. The program offered a no-nonsense approach, honestly assessing the students’ use of such substances, explaining the myths and facts of drug use, and providing a clear plan to stop abuse.
Gerrie’s qualifications include a Master’s in Counseling from Rollins College in Winter Park, Florida, and an MBA from Boston University.
Through his work with young adults, Gerrie has discovered that alcohol and drug abuse are often the source of mental health issues among youths. He works hard to help young people understand the risks of using illicit substances, the paths which led them to experiment with drugs and alcohol in the first place, and to establish goals to understand contributing factors. This method is crucial to assisting his clients in moving on from their addictions or abuse and moving forward to a new and happier life.
